Prisoners Die After A Fatal Car Accident In Lyantonde
Two prisoners died on the spot whereas seven others were left injured following a Wednesday morning road accident in Lwengo.
On Wednesday 8th, 2021, 10 prisoners and 2 prison staff were involved in a fatal car accident as they were going for labor. The incident happened at around 8:30 am when prisoners from Kabula prison in Lyantonde district were traveling for labor in a Toyota Wish, registration number UBF 472K was involved in the accident at Kiteredde village in Lwengo district.
Frank Baine identified the deceased as Willy Isheme alias “Regan” who was charged with cattle theft and John Kagwa who was also charged with theft. Of the seven prisoners who were injured, 5 are now admitted at Lyantonde Health centre IV, staff warder Kasibante Kuzairu, Assimwe Emmanuel and Tumusiime Amuza are admitted at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital.
Investigations indicate that the officer in charge of Kabula prison didn’t adhere to administrative instruction by the Commissioner General of Prisons in January 2017 regarding the transportation of prisoners. At around 8:30 am 10 prisoners, and two staff were involved in a fatal accident and unfortunately, two prisoners died on spot,” the Prisons spokesperson, Frank Baine said.
The Uganda Prisons service inspection team has been dispatched and their findings will inform the next course of action, says Frank Baine.
