In a recent development, Hon Janet Museveni, the Education Minister, has given her approval for the extension of the refurbishment project at Mandela National Stadium, popularly known as Namboole. The stadium has been undergoing renovations for the past two years, and the completion date has now been shifted from August 1st, 2023, to November 30th, 2023.
Hon Janet Museveni visited the extensive sports facility yesterday and personally evaluated the progress of the renovation works.Impressed with the significant undertakings at Namboole, she stated, “I had the opportunity to evaluate the progression of the renovation works firsthand.” The ongoing projects include the creation of a 4.2km perimeter wall and the refurbishment and elevation of the stadium and hotel to meet international standards.
The decision to extend the completion date was made after a request from the main contractor of the project, the UPDF Engineering Brigade. Considering the scope of the intervention efforts, Hon Janet Museveni granted the extension to ensure that all necessary work is completed satisfactorily.
This announcement comes in the wake of a recent setback for Ugandan football. During an AFCON qualifier game, the Uganda Cranes had to play their home game in Egypt and suffered a defeat against Tanzania. However, the detailed status report received by Hon Janet Museveni showcased that the updates at Namboole are progressing in accordance with FIFA’s standards.
The extension of the refurbishment project at Mandela National Stadium demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving sporting infrastructure in Uganda. Once completed, Namboole will serve as a world-class venue capable of hosting international events.
